Learn is an independent editorial project publishing plain-English guides to VA health care, treatment access, and family support for U.S. veterans, spouses, and families affected by mesothelioma and asbestos exposure. We are a small team of benefits writers and researchers. We sell nothing, we capture no leads, and we have no stake in what you decide to do.
Why this site exists
A mesothelioma diagnosis arrives with a stack of paperwork attached. Somewhere in the middle of appointments and scans, a family is suddenly expected to understand priority groups, community care authorizations, beneficiary travel reimbursement, caregiver support programs, My HealtheVet, and half a dozen acronyms nobody explained.
The official information exists, but it is scattered across dozens of pages, written for administrators as much as for readers, and worded so cautiously that it is hard to tell what applies to you. Meanwhile, a great deal of what ranks well when you search for help is not really information at all — it is marketing produced by law firms and claims services, built to convert a frightened family into a phone call.
We are not one of those sites. There is no case evaluation form here, no phone number to capture, nothing to buy, and no representative waiting on the other end. We explain how the system works, we point you at the official source, and then we get out of the way.
Independent and non-government
This site is independent and is NOT affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or any government agency. For official information, visit VA.gov.
We cannot enroll you, file anything for you, check your claim status, or influence a VA decision. Those things happen only through VA.gov, VA facilities, and accredited representatives. Our full independence, medical, and legal disclaimers are on our Disclaimer page, and they apply to everything we publish.
What we cover
- Health care and medical treatment — how VA cancer care works in practice: surgery and therapy options, tests such as pulmonary function testing, pain management, home oxygen and equipment, nutrition and rehabilitation services, second opinions, care navigators, and records tools like My HealtheVet.
- Family and survivor support — what is available to spouses, caregivers, and children: chaplain and social-work services, advance directives, bereavement support, and the everyday logistics of caring for someone through treatment.
- Asbestos exposure and the PACT Act — how military and civilian asbestos exposure is understood and documented, in plain terms.
- Claims process and support — general background on how VA claims and appeals work, and who can help you for free.
- Disability compensation and financial benefits — how the money side fits together, always with the current official rate tables linked rather than copied.
Our guides use careful language about eligibility — “may qualify,” “the VA generally” — because outcomes depend on individual facts. We never promise a result.
Our standards
We work from primary official sources first: VA.gov, benefits.va.gov, eCFR Title 38, cancer.gov, cdc.gov, and ssa.gov, plus reputable medical organizations for clinical background. Every article carries a byline and a reviewed-and-updated date, cites its sources with direct links, and states any figure with its year. We correct errors promptly and note material updates. The whole standard is written out on our Editorial Policy page, including the list of things we refuse to publish — settlement predictions, medical advice, fear-based content, and lead-generation funnels.
Our team
Articles are written by Margaret Ellison, David Kirkpatrick, and Rosa Delgado, independent benefits writers and researchers who each cover a distinct part of the subject — treatment and care coordination, tests and health-records tools, and family support. They are writers, not attorneys or physicians, and we say so plainly rather than dressing them up with credentials they do not hold. You can read more about each of them on our Authors page.
How we are funded
This site is supported entirely by Google AdSense display advertising. We have no affiliate links, no sponsored posts, and no paid placements, and we do not accept money from law firms, treatment centers, insurers, or claims-services companies. Advertisers have no influence over what we write. The details are on our Advertising Disclosure page.
